Did you know that the gut plays a big role in the processing of estrogen? It is a key player in the balance of estrogen within the body through the estrobolome. But what role does estrogen play in a woman’s body, how exactly does the gut help, and what can you do to support a healthy estrobolome? Let’s dive in!
Role of Estrogen
For women, estrogen is a hormone produced by fat tissue, adrenal glands, and the ovaries. It plays an important role in skin, bone, reproductive, and heart health. So it’s very important and why balanced estrogen levels in the body really matters.
Too little estrogen can cause negative symptoms like mood swings, hot flashes, and overall irregular menstrual cycles.
Too much estrogen can increase the risk of PCOS, endometriosis, and negative symptoms like cramps, breast tenderness, hormonal acne, and irregular cycles as well.
Keeping estrogen balanced in the body is so important for overall wellness and daily wellness!
The Estrobolome
The estrobolome, AKA the estrogen microbiome, is how the gut processes estrogen. It’s a collection of bacteria in the gut that is responsible for metabolizing/processing estrogen. When this bacteria is out of balance, it can cause the circulation and excretion of estrogen in the body to be affected, causing an imbalance of estrogen.
A Healthy Estrobolome
So, now that you know the importance of the estrobolome and balanced estrogen in the body, let’s look at how to keep the estrobolome supported and healthy!
Fiber-rich foods: Less time for estrogen to be reabsorbed back into the body and helps excrete excess estrogen.
Phytoestrogens: Phytoestrogens may help if an individual has estrogen dominance by weakly binding to estrogen receptor sites.
Hydration: Helps support a healthy gut with a high-fiber diet and helps move things along the digestive tract, helping eliminate unneeded estrogen.
Foods rich in d-glucaric acid: Helps prevent the gut from reabsorbing estrogen that the body is trying to get rid of.
Probiotics and prebiotics: Foods full of prebiotics and probiotics help support overall gut health, meaning they will do the same for the estrobolome as well.
Lower exposure to xenoestrogens: These are man-made estrogen-mimicking compounds that can impact many aspects of wellness. Avoid things like parabens, BPA, etc.
These aspects can help to support gut health and the estrobolome within the gut, helping overall wellness and balance of estrogen in the body!
